Monday, March 12, 2007

As you are aware, Outdoor Ed students will be embarking on a cross country trip on Wednesday March 14. Trip departure will be at 8:00 am, so please have students arriving at 7:50 in the front foyer to meet the drivers (Mr. Dupis, Mr. Randshuizen, and Myself). We are to return by 3:15.

Our trip destination of priority is Healy Creek, which is located at the entrance of the Sunshine ski resort road. Snow conditions are spring like at present, however it has been pouring rain in Banff. Should trail conditions deteriorate, we will be re-routing to the Canmore Nordic Centre.
Students will be outdoors for upwards of four hours and are required to bring a backpack with the following:

a large water
a lunch (preferably littterless). Grabbable snacks such as pepperoni sticks tend to be a favorite.
sunglasses
tuque
any medication that will need to be carried (I will carry this)
One extra piece used for an emergency warm layer such as a fleece sweater or light blanket.
space to put shedding layers is a bonus

As will be discussed with the students, layering is ideal for cross country skiing. Students will get hot and sweaty while skiing, and cold when stopping for lunch. If possible, please try to avoid jeans and cottons as they do not breathe well and get wet. FYI, guides attire for spring conditions is long johns, fleece pants, wetpants, microfibre shirt (long or short sleeve), fleece or wool sweater and a wind breaker or winter shell. If checking the weather that morning, it is safe to assume that temperatures in Banff on average are 5 degrees below Calgary.
Thank you for your support. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email me at dgeddert@bearspawschool.com
